JAPANESE SPITZ BREED STANDARD (Translated from Japanese)

The Japanese Spitz, as a companion dog, is identified and perfectly described by the following characteristic features:

General appearance

The body posture is highly forward, with a moderately long neck strongly supporting a relatively small head held high.

Long, pure white coat, harmonious with the structure, adding charm and elegance, and an appearance of neatness.

Movement with a quick and light gait gives the long-haired dog a distinctive beauty.

This particular type of movement and beautiful coat together present a particularly graceful figure.

Temperament gentle but cautious, intelligent, alert, and loyal.

Coat

Long guard hair, straight and slightly stiff, supported by a soft, dense, and short undercoat. The guard hair in harmony with the plumage and build creates a beautiful body figure.

Shorter and smooth coat on the front and hind legs, below the hock joint. Abundant plumage on the back side of the forearms, between the wrist and elbow.

The hair is pure white. Shiny is desired.

Colored, curly or wavy fur is not allowed! Only a slight wave on the tail is permissible.

Head

Skull slightly rounded and harmonious with the rest of the body. Excessively rounded skull is not desired. Muzzle shaped like a fox, length and thickness of the muzzle proportional to the head.

Black lips, tightly fitting, not hanging. Stop slightly marked, forehead above the stop short-haired. Hair on the face short and smooth.

Teeth white and strong; scissors bite.

Ears

Proportional to the head, erect, set forward. Too widely spaced or too close together are not desired. Drooping ears are not allowed.

Eyes

In the shape of a ginkgo nut or almond. Black eye rims, dark-colored eyes. Too round eyes take away the dog's elegance. Bulging eyes are not allowed in a spitz.

Nose

Round, glossy black. A nose that is too large or square is not desired.

The nose should be about 1.5 times larger than the eyes.

The nose line is straight. A bent nose line is not accepted.

Back

Straight and short. Loin Strong and well-developed.

Chest

Ribs well arched, not too wide, but deep.

Belly

Well tucked up and tapering from the chest.

Front limbs

Straight, relatively slender but strong. Elbows tight, pasterns slightly sloping.

Both limbs parallel to each other, viewed from the front. Well cushioned, cat-like paws.

Pads thick, preferably black.

Front limbs neither too wide nor too narrow when viewed from the front.

Hind limbs

Muscular thighs, knee joints and hock joints bent. Pasterns vertical when viewed from the side, both hind limbs parallel to each other, viewed from the back. Paws and pads the same as in the front limbs.

Hind limbs neither too wide nor too narrow when viewed from the back.

Tail

Medium length, set high on the back, with the tip of the tail curled. Excessive curling near the base of the tail or a tail hanging to the side is not desired. Abundantly feathered with a beautiful plume.

Height

30-38 cm

Preferably:

33-38 cm for males,

10:11

Ideal ratio is 10:10.5 for males and 10:11 for females.

However, there are rare cases in reality where individuals with a high withers achieve this ideal. Previous measurements have shown a ratio of 10:11 for males and 10:11.5 for females.

Weight

Height (in cm) × 0.20-0.23.

Disqualifying faults

Aggression or excessive timidity,

Drooping ears,

Tail not carried on the back.

Any dog exhibiting physical or psychological abnormalities should be disqualified.

Note: Males should have two normally developed testicles in the scrotum.
